While the warm weather, beaches, and array of fun activities make living in the Sunshine State of Florida a fantastic experience, one thing that can become a nuisance and potential health hazard along the way is mosquitoes. Linked to numerous illnesses, these insect pests unfortunately thrive in hot and humid areas such as the ones in this state. While your first reaction may be to go to your nearest grocery or home improvement store and load up on cans of bug spray to aid in pest control, that will only put a band-aid on the bigger problem. Since the vast majority of mosquitoes live within a half-mile area of where they originally hatch, it's crucial to get them out of your lawn as fast as possible. If you're in need of ideas for how to do so, we here at J.P.'s Termite & Pest Control Inc. have five tips to help you combat these pesky pests this Spring. Remove Standing Water If you want to provide the perfect spot for a mosquito breeding ground, leave standing water in your yard. Whether it is water that has accumulated in flower pots or bird feeders, or perhaps areas in your yard that allow for puddles or small ponds to form, it is crucial you eliminate these problem areas as fast as possible. Also, if you own a pool, regular maintenance will be necessary to avoid a mosquito problem. So long as your pool is up-to-date on its treatments, you won't have to worry about a mosquito laying its eggs there. Mosquito-Repelling Plants If you find yourself having a picnic or hosting an outdoor party with friends and family, be sure to have it sprayed at least 24 hours in advance to prevent mosquitoes from crashing your event. You can always let us know ahead of time and we can swing by your property and get the job done! Remove Yard Debris While we here at J.P.'s have many solutions to help rid your yard of the dreaded mosquito, one of the most proactive things you can do is remove various types of yard debris from around your home or business. For example, one of the best things you can do is clean out your gutters at least twice per year, of which one time should be in late Spring. Along with this, if you have various trees in your yard, we recommend raking your yard regularly, usually after each mowing. Finally, tidy up any nearby flower pots and empty the saucers underneath, since this will eliminate standing water. Early Morning Grass Watering If you are like most folks in the Sunshine State, you make it a habit of watering your lawn to keep it green during the hot weather. However, if you want to make sure a mosquito and its friends don't take up residence in your yard, it will be best if you do your grass watering during the early morning hours. By doing so, you'll get the advantage of having the water soak into the lawn before the sun hits its stride, but also be sure any excess water evaporates before sundown. Should you make the mistake of watering in the evening, you'll simply create a moisture-filled lawn that any mosquito will be proud to call home. Mow Your Yard While it may not be the most pleasant task on a hot day, mowing your yard on a regular basis will go a long way toward helping rid your lawn of the dreaded mosquito. Surprisingly, while a mosquito will love heat, it can also be very prone to overheating. Thus, if you keep your grass mowed weekly rather than letting it grow tall and thus provide cover for a mosquito and its friends, you'll keep your grass healthy while also giving a mosquito one less place to hide and lay eggs. By following the above-mentioned tips, you can hopefully keep your yard from becoming a mosquito hangout. Jason ParkerIn 1999, I decided to start my own pest control business so I could have more flexibility in order to be involved in my sons' sporting activities (and to be able to fish when I wanted to). Twenty years later, I'm proud to have my sons working with me helping grow the company! Archives
